Be a Caretaker of Consciousness

(If you prefer listening you'll find this topic on my podcast too!)
Most people consider inanimate objects to be nonliving things, but today I’m going to ask you to open your heart to the possibility that everything is alive with its own “being-ness.” When you take time to connect and commune with any object, you participate in the co-creative tapestry of life in a magical way!
Everything in the world has its own energy field and its own consciousness.
Inanimate objects can carry outside energies that have been impressed upon them (the way rooms hold the positive or negative energies that have been expressed inside them), but I believe they also have their own inherent consciousness.
I’ve always intuitively felt this to be true, and I was so excited to find more about this subject in David Spangler’s book, Subtle Worlds: An Explorer’s Field Notes.
In Chapter 6 of Subtle Worlds, David Spangler says: “When I look around me at the things in my world and say, ‘Everything is Alive,’ what I’m really saying is that everything is consciousness in a process of evolution.”
He goes on to say, “We are each caretakers for the consciousness evolving around us, particularly those of a lesser complexity and capacity than our own.”
Take a moment now to check in with your own feelings about this idea, and notice any wisdom or insights that come to you.
Now Let’s Create a HEART CONNECTION
I devote a whole chapter to this topic in my Guardian Gateway book, and this is part of what I say:
When you love something, it starts to love you back.
You can begin to experience this by randomly choosing an object that’s in front of you right now. (Make sure this is something made by humans, not a crystal or stone.)
I’m sitting at my desk right now, and I see pens, pencils, my computer mouse, my mouse pad, and my keyboard before me. I’ll choose a pen to use as our example today. This particular pen is a navy-blue Cross pen that my good friend Glennie gave me for Christmas one year.
I start by grounding myself into the love of the Earth, picking up the pen, and focusing all my attention on it. I open my mind to see the pen as a holder of its own consciousness. In doing this, I feel like I’m really seeing it for the first time, and I open my heart and shine love to this pen. I imagine that my love is enveloping and filling the pen.
Now I expand my awareness and tune in to the energy of the pen. The first thing I notice is the energy of Glennie’s love wrapped around the pen. When I allow myself to go deeper, I intuitively feel the pen’s own presence. It’s a very simple presence, not like a human presence at all, but I can still feel it. I continue to send the pen my love, and I feel a heart connection being formed.
Try this for yourself now. Choose an object, ground yourself into the love of the Earth, and really see the object as you focus all your attention on it. Open your heart and shine love to this object. Now open your awareness and tune in to the energy of the object. Go past the outside energies that may be surrounding it, and intuitively tune in to its own inherent presence.
Create a heart connection with this object, and open yourself to any positive energies you feel coming back to you. You may feel these right away, or it may take time, but I’m willing to bet that as you look at this object right now, you feel a connection that wasn’t there yesterday.
Love is the "Miracle-Gro" of the Universe, and your love helps the objects around you to evolve in their consciousness. As they do, you’ll feel their love coming back to you.
Now That You’ve Had a Chance to Connect with an Object, Let’s Go Even Deeper
I’ll use a coffee mug as our next example.
I love to collect coffee mugs (even though I drink tea instead of coffee). Whenever I go someplace new, this is the souvenir I usually choose.
Every morning I go to my mug cupboard and spend a moment choosing which mug feels right for that particular day.
Some mugs have logos (like from restaurants or Disneyland), and some have pictures (like the mug I got at the top of the John Hancock building in Chicago).
Some are mugs that I’ve received as gifts (like a Unicorn mug from my son, Jimmy), and some represent whole cities (like my favorite Starbucks San Francisco mug). Let’s use that mug as an example.
If I open myself to the energy of the mug, I might first come into contact with outside energies that the mug is carrying.
For instance, if I received it as a gift, I might feel the love of the person who gave it to me, like I did with the Pen from my friend Glennie.
Or it might have leftover energy from the store I bought it from. (I actually bought it at a Starbucks in Sausalito, which is a beautiful place across the bay from San Francisco.)
This particular mug might hold some of the energy of the city it represents, since the San Francisco skyline is printed on the mug’s surface, and the name of the city is printed on the inside of the cup. It might even carry some of the energy of the company it represents: Starbucks.
Going deeper, I will find the energy of “cup” itself, the same energy and intention that is in all cups, everywhere.
And beneath all of that is the consciousness of this individual cup.
That’s the energy that I can choose to connect to, and foster, and love.
You might not consciously feel all the energies I listed when you connect with an item. But it’s good to know that they may be there as you start connecting with some of your favorite items.
If you have a souvenir mug in your cupboard, take it out now and connect to it through your heart.
Go past all the outside energies until you connect with the spirit of the mug itself. Then flow love to it from your heart, and notice what you feel in return.
Becoming a Caretaker of Consciousness
We began this episode with the premise that everything has its own energy field and its own consciousness.
As you recognize the consciousness in the things around you and continue to connect with love to each thing, you will begin to become a caretaker of consciousness. And in time, you will begin to feel that love and care coming back to you, surrounding you in an interconnected web of love and support.
